When painting woodwork, start at the top of the room and work down: ceiling molding, doors, windows, chair-rail moldings, then baseboards, save wear and tear on your knees when painting baseboards by wearing knee pads or by kneeling on a cushion. The edge of woodwork is sometimes curved or very narrow, less than one inch, making it difficult to paint them neatly. Vertical edges of windows and door casings not only are narrow but also are often at an angle that is difficult to reach easily with a paintbrush.

It is sometimes a good idea to paint the woodwork before painting the walls, overlapping the walls slightly as you work on the woodwork. You find it easier to paint a straight edge along a wall than along the edges of narrow or curved woodwork. Be sure to protect freshly painted woodwork when working with a roller on walls. Before removing paint from woodwork, test the surface for old lead paint. The dust produced by sanding can carry the lead paint throughout the house, posing a serious health threat.

Painting woodwork requires a slightly different technique than covering the walls and ceilings does. The sweeping motions of using a roller give way to the control and precision of using a brush on a small surface. Also, brush marks are more likely to occur on wood than on plaster or drywall. You can choose a bold color to contrast with the color of walls and ceilings, or use the woodwork as a frame to highlight the color of the walls. If the woodwork is quite ordinary, you can make it blend into the background.

Whether the woodwork has been painted before or not, wood must be properly prepared before being painted. In general, this means filling any cracks and holes and then sanding the surface. To sand concave surface, wrap the paper around a section of hose or pipe. Large flat surfaces can be sanded with a sheet of paper wrapped around a wood block. The sanding gives the surface tooth, or something to which the new paint can adhere.

If you are a pro or a novice woodworker than you should know that a decent woodworking project will use glue, but a great woodworking project will use wood biscuits. A wood biscuit is small and oval shaped. They are disks that are put in using a tool called a biscuit joiner. In olden days these biscuits were not used and a wooden peg was used instead. Theses were the primitive form of wood biscuits.

Use a wood biscuit to join a piece of wood together. This is used instead of glue and usually if the project uses panels with more than twelve inches they will need to be joined with wood biscuits. This stops the final piece from being full of seams. Glue is useful at times, but if you want a really great project then you’ll need to use wood biscuits too. These are simple and not hard to use. If you get a good biscuit joiner then you can use it to cut a hope in the opposite edge of the project that you are building. You then cover the wood biscuit with glue and put it in the slot. Simply clamp the two boards together and you are almost down creating a truly great woodworking project.

Biscuits are useful because of their strength and durability. You can use them to join together wood pieces that are not able to be held together with glue alone. A wood biscuit is made of several different kinds of wood pieces. This usually means shavings from beech or another type of wood. The actual make-up of a wood biscuit will vary from company to company. Once the biscuit is connecting the pieces of wood it will expand within the slot and this will make the joint tighten up. This will make your work very smooth.

Biscuits are quite small and usually they are one fourteenth of an inch thick, but you can buy them in different thicknesses from different companies. The other normal wood biscuit sizes are size zero which is five eights of an inch wide and one and three quarter inches long. A size number ten is three quarters of an inch wide and two and one eighths of an inch long. Size number twenty is one inch wide and two and three eighths of an inch long. Different companies make different size biscuits. If you want a certain size then you should look around at different brands.

Use a biscuit that will help you with your project the best. You should try to use a larger sized biscuit This will make your piece more stable. You can also use a wood biscuit to join any project together. There are a few places where they are normally used in certain joints. If you are creating an edge to edge joint for a project such as a table then you can use a biscuit to add more stability to your project.

With amateur photography gaining in popularity, digital cameras are becoming the norm. The convenience of digital cameras over traditional film cameras coupled with recent advancements in picture quality have meant more pictures conveying happy holiday memories than ever before.

Back in 2003 12.8 million digital cameras were owned, a marginally larger number than film cameras, 33% of households were seen to own a digital camera by the end of the year.

Cameras such as these in combination with other digital products such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) and MP3 players all require media on which to store the digital data. Flash media, memory cards and microdrives were designed in combination with these digital products. Unfortunately, as with computers, digital media does occasionally suffer from corruption which in turn can cause stored information to become locked away in the storage media, supposedly inaccessible.

A wide variety of digital storage media forms exist today, all with varying storage capacities dependant upon make and model. 8MB through to larger 6GB microdrives are now possible.

First placed into this market by SanDisk Corporation in 1994, CompactFlash Memory has become the most popular storage media of late. This media uses flash memory semiconductor technology able to house audio, text, video and images on flash chips. Being non-volatile and also solid state (no battery is required to keep the data stored and no moving parts exist) has made this technology tough and reliable, just right for portable digital products.

Sony and Toshiba created Memory Sticks and SmartMedia cards, respectively, which also turned out to be very popular. Memory Sticks have become the dominant storage media type for their own products, digital cameras, Clie’ handhelds and computers. Other manufacturers also use Memory Sticks, in particular Konica. SmartMedia cards tend to be rather thin and fragile, and have a top capacity of 128MB. Similar to solid state technology, no moving parts and a small size are perfect for active and constant transfers between digital devices.

Initially introduced in 1998 with a capacity of 170MB, IBM Microdrives are also now popular and have grown in storage size to be able to cope with 2GB. Although solid state memory cards like CompactFlash are more impact resistant, microdrives have been seen as reliable and very economic with regards to digital devices.

Whatever format you use, be it one of the afore mentioned, or some of the other varieties e.g. SecureDigital, xD Picture Card, MultiMedia Card, Mini CD-R/CD-RW, more and more people are relying on digital media and its associated problems, rather than traditional film.

Gone are the cases of film overexposure and damaged film rolls, in come the hardware failures and data corruption. Data organization and storage now uses the FAT file system. Corruption of this filing system results in the digital device that houses the memory card not being able to locate the data, whatever is stored being ‘lost’, although still remaining on the memory card.

Corruption typically occurs when a device is low on power or when memory cards are removed whilst the power is still on. Such circumstances result in the file systems not pointing to the data. Hardware failure tends to come from damage, e.g. by rough handling or accidental breakage, to the digital media so that it is unable to properly connect with the associated device which needs to read the data.

Various data recovery companies, such as Vogon, MJM, Storagesearch, CBL-Tech and Ontrack, are readily available for any of the data recovery difficulties you may encounter with digital storage medias and their associated devices. A wealth of experience and data recovery innovations mean that most data that is ‘lost’ is in fact retrievable with the right techniques.

Before you start a woodworking project, you will have to have plans. Patterns for woodworking or scroll saw projects are used to plan the project and put special accents in the project. A good plan will give you step by step instructions along with diagrams and illustrations to help you. You can either buy plans in a store or look for them on the Internet.

Many plans are available in the Internet, some free and some not. There are patterns for every project you can imagine, from a little box or a bird feeder to a large piece of furniture. There are sites that specialize in certain classes of plans, such as toys, or decorative items. Just put the type in your browser window and you will see a world of plans.

Plans can also be found in woodworking books, available in stores, in the library or on the Internet. Woodworking magazines often feature plans in each issue, so if you buy a few you will probably find a plan you need. If a certain magazine has the kind you like, you can subscribe.

New comers should start with simple plans. They will be easier to read and follow. When you get better, you can move onto more complex plans. A simple toy or a birdhouse is a good way to start. Make sure the plans you get are detailed enough. with illustrations as well as written instructions. Keep your plans in an organized binder and you can use them again and again.

Even though you are following a step by step plan, you may want to make a few changes to the plan. This is a great way to personalize it. Just a small change to an accent piece can make it look completely different. Or you can opt for painting a project when the plans call for staining it.

After you have created a few projects, you may want to consider designing your own plans. Sketch out what you want. You don’t have to be too precise at first. After the initial sketch, decide how big you want it to be, what kind of wood you want to use. Then use the measurement to determine how much wood you need. Make sure you have enough so you don’t run out. Decide what other materials are needed for the project so you can calculate the whole cost.

Then make a list of the material and the quality you want to use. Make sure you remember paint, stain and polyurethane. Make sure you have the proper tools for the project. Then you can go shopping for the project supplies. At this point, you can make a more detailed design of your project. Create your diagrams the way you have seen them on the plans you have used in the past, and then map out each step you need to take. Writing out the steps like this will keep you organized so you will not skip any steps and ruin the project.

Having someone to organize all your appointments would be a professional’s dream. But unfortunately not everyone can afford the monthly expenses of having a personal assistant to tag around with. Managing all your contacts and tasks can be a mess, especially if that reliable old notepad doesn’t sound any alarm for an important task you need to do or worst an important business meeting with a sensitive client.

Owning a personal digital assistant or a PDA has been a must for people who are constantly up on their toes. It has been a commodity for almost all professions nowadays since it satisfies the common office needs. Basically a PDAs function is a personal information management device. These keeps critical information such as contact numbers, addresses, birthdates, anniversaries, important dates, notes and a task or schedule manager.

With numerous brands and models in the PDA market today, choosing which model and brand to buy can be mind boggling. A thing the buyer should know before buying is that a PDA is just a peripheral that still needs a full blown computer for it to function well. A PDA or a pocket pc cannot at this stage rival the capabilities of the computer. Though it may have applications that can be of the same with a full blown pc, it is just for temporary substitute for the mean time. Application made for PDAs and pocket pc only carries the core component and lacks big time on other features.

The first question is “what are the user’s current needs?” followed by “what are the possible near future needs?” Since PDAs come in all types and sizes, the use needs to be broken down into several segments of use.

Entry Level Users

A PDA user of this level only needs the core PIM or personal information management applications such as task scheduler, contacts, notepad manager and PDF file viewer. The user may be at the office most of the time but needs an instrument to remind him of his tasks and appointments.

Mid-Level Users

Users of this level may be constantly out of the office and may need to bring along data that is crucial for meetings and presentations. The type of PDA needed for this user needs to process more than just the PIM task but also other third party application software. Probably it might also be helpful to buy a PDA with a built-in digital camera. Be sure to buy a PDA unit that can pack in extra memory and batteries. A recommended feature would be an extended removable memory card slot and a removable battery slot so it would be easier to change batteries.

Expert-level Users

This level is the hardest to please. These are on the go users that you can seldom find in offices. They pack gadgets to keep them on track of everything -pretty demanding need for such a small computer component. They constantly need live up to date information that is crucial in their day to day dealings.

The PDA they need are the top of the line pocket pc. Probably the user might need a phone to go with that gadget since mobile phone offers 3G connectivity. This technology can get users to connect to the internet 24/7 at virtually anywhere. This class of gadgets is packed with Wifi, video conferencing feature and a QWERTY keyboard layout for users that need constant data entry.
